How to Make an Awesome DIY Accent Light

Making this DIY accent light is a great starter project and can be completed in a single weekend. The accent light uses easy to work with LED strips which can be readily purchased online and are almost fool proof to work with. The total cost of materials used in the project are less than $10 and produces an very clean and professional finished product. Purchasing S4S (surfaced on four sides) greatly reduces the amount of sanding required but could easily be accomplished with rough lumber as well.

Cutting the accent light base and top on the CNC

I used Carbide Create to setup the gcode files and a Shapeoko 3 XXL to cut out the finished pieces. All the cuts were accomplished using a single 1/4″ straight endmill. This could easily be accomplished on any hobby CNC machine but the guys over at Carbide 3D have produced a great product which is fun to work with.

Laser cutting the acrylic for the DIY accent light

File setup was handled in Lightburn. While this was a simple project as far as laser cutting the ability to set a kerf offset makes dialing in the final dimensions of the accent light acrylic a breeze.

Materials used in the DIY accent light projects are

  • 3.5″ x 3.5″ x 1/4″ Red Oak Panel S4S
  • 3.5″ x 3.5″ x 3/4″ Red Oak Board S4S
  • 0.200″ thick acrylic panel
  • Warm White 5V LED Strip Light
  • 5v power supply
